Obtaining Legendary Gear in Shadowlands

Unlocking the Runecarver

After reaching level 60 and joining a covenant, you'll receive the introductory questline for The Maw and Torghast. As part of the questline, you'll unlock the Runecarver through the Prison of the Forgotten quest. The Runecarver's chamber inside Torghast is where you'll go whenever you want to craft or upgrade a legendary item.

Crafting Legendary Gear

Once you have the Runecarver unlocked and have taught him the recipe you need, you'll be able to craft your legendary item! Each legendary power is available for specific gear slots and requires a set of materials detailed below.

Whenever possible, I recommend crafting your legendary item for a slot that can have a socket added to it using. So either Head, Neck, Wrist, Waist, or Finger. Sockets won't be lost even when upgrading a legendary item, making for a great investment.

In Season 4, you should craft your legendary item outside of the Head, Shoulder, Chest, Hand, and Leg slots, as these slots can be occupied by tier set pieces, the Stats and Gearing page has more specific information on which gear slot you should craft the best in slot legendary for.

Materials Required

  • Base Gear Piece
  • Two Secondary Stat Missives
  • Soul Ash, Soul Cinders, Cosmic Flux (depending on rank)
Base Gear Piece

Base Gear Pieces are crafted by player professions and should be for the gear slot you want the legendary to be crafted for. Restoration Druids will primarily employ Leatherworkers, with Jewelcrafters handling the ring and neck slots, and Tailors handling the Back slot. Each piece has seven ranks available to craft, with the higher ranks costing more resources but offering a higher item level. Below is a list of the relevant base gear pieces for Restoration Druids at their highest crafting rank.

Head - Umbrahide Helm
Neck - Shadowghast Necklace
Shoulder - Umbrahide Pauldrons
Back - Grim-Veiled Cape
Chest - Umbrahide Vest
Wrist - Umbrahide Armguards
Hands - Umbrahide Gauntlets
Waist - Umbrahide Waistguard
Legs - Umbrahide Leggings
Feet - Umbrahide Treads
Finger - Shadowghast Ring

Secondary Stat Missives

Secondary Stat Missives are crafted by the Inscription profession and dictate which two secondary stats your final legendary item will have.

Best Missives to use for Raiding and Mythic+ - +

Raiding

The missives you pick should correspond to your lowest secondary stat unless you're still short on Haste.

Mythic+

Maximum Healing

  1. Missive of Mastery if your Mastery is below 30%.
  2. Missive of Haste if your Mastery is at or above 30%.
  3. Missive of Versatility if both your Mastery and Haste are at or above 30%.

Maximum Damage

  1. Missive of Haste if your Haste is below 30%.
  2. Missive of Versatility if your Haste is at or above 30%.
  3. Missive of Critical Strike if both your Haste and Versatility are at or above 30%.

Soul Ash

Soul Ash is a currency obtained by completing layers in Torghast. You can earn as much as you want per week by repeating Torghast layers.

The amount of Soul Ash you need depends on the rank of the Base Gear Piece you're using, with higher ranks requiring more. If you're upgrading a legendary item, subtract the amount of Soul Ash it takes to craft the rank you're at from the amount it takes to craft the rank you're upgrading to. For example, upgrading from rank 1 to rank 4 will take 3900 Soul Ash (5150-1250=3900).

  • Rank 1 (190): 1250
  • Rank 2 (210): 2000
  • Rank 3 (225): 3200
  • Rank 4 (235): 5150
  • Rank 5+: 5150
Soul Cinders

Soul Cinders is a currency obtained by completing layers 9-16 in Torghast. You can earn as much as you want to per week by repeating Torghast layers.

The amount of Soul Cinders you need depends on the rank of the Base Gear Piece you're using, with higher ranks requiring more Soul Cinders. If you're upgrading a legendary item, subtract the amount of Soul Cinders it takes to craft the rank you're at from the amount it takes to craft the rank you're upgrading to.

  • Rank 5 (249): 1100
  • Rank 6 (262): 1650
  • Rank 7+: 1650
Cosmic Flux

Cosmic Flux is a currency obtained primarily from treasures, rares, and quests in Zereth Mortis, but also from Torghast, Mythic+ dungeons, rated PvP, and Sepulcher of the First Ones.

You need 2000 Cosmic Flux to upgrade a legendary item to Rank 7.
