Guarm, Healer Guide
Updated 6 years, 6 months ago for patch 7.2 by Preston. View the change log.
This page covers a healer-focused strategy for Guarm in the Trial of Valor. While it's tailored for healers, other roles may also find the information useful. If you have any suggestions or feedback, you can leave a comment below or tweet @PrestonDvorak.
This guide has been updated and maintained based on my own experiences with the fight as well as Dungeon Journal information. I'll continue to update it as-needed.
General Mechanics and Abilities
Normal and Heroic
This is a single-stage fight and revolves heavily around stacking and soaking damage when it's needed, and avoiding damage when soaking isn't needed.
- Guardian's Breath casues Guarm to gain stacks of Frothing Rage if any player fails to soak a breath attack.
- Fiery Phlegm, Salty Spittle, Dark Discharge are the three different breath attacks.
- Based on the amount of damage the breath's do, you'll likely need at least 5 players soaking each breath.
- The same players can't soak different breaths. Once you soak a Fire breath, you must soak Fire breaths until Headlong Charge is used.
- In addition to the Breath's, each head has a distinct ability that affects players individually, called Guardian's Licks.
- You should remain at least 5-yards from other players to help mitigate some of the effects from these abilities.
- Flame Lick deals heavy damage to the targeted player and additional damage to nearby players.
- Frost Lick stuns players near the targeted player.
- Shadow Lick places a heavy healing absorb on players near the target.
- The tanks must contend with Multi-Headed.
- This means both tanks will be taking damage, regardless of who currently has threat.
- Don't stand too close to the front of the boss to avoid Flashing Fangs.
- Roaring Leap is another source of random damage, and will normally target the melee players as they should be more grouped up.
- Headlong Charge must be avoided.
- Guarm will leap to the edge of the room and run around counterclockwise one time before resuming his normal behavior.
- While Guarm is running, the entire group will be taking heavy damage.
- Being hit by Guarm will kill you.
Mythic Differences
- Guarm will now place three different Volatile Foam debuffs on random players.
- Flaming Volatile Foam, Briney Volatile Foam, or Shadowy Volatile Foam.
- When these expire, it behaves as if the affected player was hit by Guardian's Breath.
- If the debuff on a player does not match their Breath debuff, they should stand by a matching player to be dispelled.
Healing Strategy
Healing this fight is very simple, with the heaviest damage coming during Headlong Charge.
- When the group soaks Guardian's Breath they will need a moderate amount of healing.
- Individual players affected by Guardian's Licks will require different responses depending on the Lick used.
- Targets of Flame Lick will need moderate healing, and nearby players may need light healing.
- Players stunned by Frost Lick can be dispelled.
- Players affected by the healing absorb from Shadow Lick should be healed quickly to remove the absorb.
- Both tanks will need consistent healing due to Multi-Headed.
- The group of players affected by Roaring Leap will need moderate to heavy healing depending on the number of players hit.
- You will likely need to use a group-healing cooldown during Headlong Charge to keep everyone alive.
- On Mythic,
- Flaming Volatile Foam, Briney Volatile Foam, or Shadowy Volatile Foam need to be dispelled from players who don't have a matching Breath debuff.
Debuffs to Track
- Flame Lick will cause the targeted player and nearby players to need additional healing.
- Frost Lick will cause players to be stunned, and should be dispelled (I'm assuming the stun is of the same name, if not I will update this).
- Shadow Lick causes players to need additional healing.
DBM Settings
Below are the DBM settings I'll be using for Guarm. You can set them up however you'd like, but these ones should work well as a starting point. Some settings may be Mythic only.
