Grong, the Revenant (A), Healer Guide
Updated 4 years, 3 months ago for patch 8.1.5 by Preston. View the change log.
This page covers a healer-focused strategy for Grong, the Revenant (A) in Battle of Dazar'alor. While it's tailored for healers, other roles may also find the information useful. If you have any suggestions or feedback, you can leave a comment below or tweet @PrestonDvorak.
This guide has been updated and maintained based on my own experiences with the envounter as well as Dungeon Journal information. I'll continue to update it as-needed.
General Mechanics and Abilities
Normal and Heroic
This is a single stage fight available to Horde players.
- Grong slowly gains Death Energy throughout the fight.
- At 70% and 40% health, the Death Energy generation rate increases.
- The tanks will be dealing with Necrotic Combo.
- The following are used in a random order per combo.
- Bestial Smash deals moderate damage and applies Crushed, increasing damage taken from subsequent Bestial Smashes.
- Rending Bite applies a stack, dealing increasing damage over time depending on the number of stacks.
- On Heroic, the following always ends the combo.
- Bestial Throw grabs the tank and deals heavy damage over time.
- Upon completion, if affected by Bestial Impact, move as far away from the group as possible to mitigate the damage dealt.
- Bestial Throw grabs the tank and deals heavy damage over time.
- The following are used in a random order per combo.
- Death Knell deals steadily increasing damage to the group over 1 to 4 seconds.
- Duration depends on the total amount of Death Energy when Death Knell begins. Below are rough approximations.
- 100% - 4-seconds
- 75% - 3-seconds
- 50% - 2-seconds
- 25% - 1-second
- Automatically triggers when at 100% Death Energy.
- Applies one stack of Death Touched per second, dealing additional light damage over time.
- Death Knell can be managed using Necrotic Cores from Death Specters, detailed below.
- Duration depends on the total amount of Death Energy when Death Knell begins. Below are rough approximations.
- Stay at least 10-yards away from players in melee to avoid extra damage from Deathly Slam.
- Avoid the resulting Deathly Echo patches.
- Death Specters periodically join the fight.
- These are stationary and don't need to be tanked.
- Interrupt Death Empowerment to prevent Grong from gaining additional Death Energy.
- When targeted by Voodoo Blast, move away from the group to prevent other players being hit and to drop the resulting Chill of Death pool.
- Move Grong and players away before they die to avoid Spirit Dispersion giving Grong additional Death Energy and damaging players.
- Drops Necrotic Core when killed.
- Picking these up deals light damage over time and allows the player to use the Discharge Necrotic Core Extra Action Button to deal damage to Grong and force him to use Death Knell if above 25% Death Energy.
- On Heroic, be within 5-yards of at least one other player before Ferocious Roar to avoid being Feared.
Mythic Differences
- There appear to be no mechanical or ability differences on Mythic difficulty.
Healing Notes
Quick Notes, All Difficulties
The notes below mostly pertain to progression difficulty, meaning if you out-gear the difficulty you're on or use extra healers they may not apply.
- Use Major Cooldowns on
- Use Minor Cooldowns on
- Pre-heal Before (mainly for heal over time classes)
- Potion of Replenishment use
- after Bestial Impact and/or Reverberating Slam
- Other things to watch for
- Tanks will be taking significant damage through out the fight due to Bestial Combo.
- Players holding Necrotic Core or targeted by Voodoo Blast will need additional healing.
Debuffs to Track
Major
- Bestial Throw causes the tank to need moderate healing over time.
- (Optional) Crushed causes the tank to take fatal damage if hit by another Bestial Smash.
- Tracking this may allow you to save the tank with an external cooldown if necessary.
Minor
- Rending Bite causes the tank to need light healing over time.
- Voodoo Blast causes the affected player to need moderate healing.
- Necrotic Core causes the player holding the core to need additional healing.
DBM Settings
Below are the DBM settings I'll be using for Grong, the Revenant (A). You can set them up however you'd like, but these ones should work well as a starting point. Some settings may be Mythic only.
